What's in your tap water?!
Although most European countries are fortunate to have some of the safest drinking water in the world, outbreaks of disease do still occur each year.
Around 330,000 cases of water-related disease such as E.coli and the norovirus are reported yearly in Europe according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Between 2000 and 2007 there were 354 outbreaks of waterborne diseases across 14 countries. Symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach pains, nausea, headache, and fever.
The £8.9 million five-year project will research ways of detecting viruses, bacteria and parasites in water before they can make people sick.
The project will carry out field research in drinking water and food production systems across Europe, and looks to improve the water being provided.
